Please help Brady's family. "Seventeen-year old Brady Folkens died while incarcerated at the STAR Academy juvenile detention center in Custer, South Dakota, on December 21, 2013. His offense: smoking marijuana and playing hooky from school."
Brady’s autopsy at Avera McKennan Hospital blamed his death on acute lymphocytic myocarditis from a parvovirus B19 infection. But the following laboratory tests prove he did not have an acute infection from this virus:
- • IgM for parvovirus B19 was negative.
- • Immunoperoxidase stain for this virus was negative.
- • The specific cellular damage caused by this virus was not seen by microscopic examination.
All these tests were ignored in Brady’s autopsy report. In fact, Brady Folkens had no laboratory blood or tissue tests positive for the presence of parvovirus B19.
We believe Brady Folkens died from a reaction to Minocycline, an acne medication prescribed to him and to which he was allergic. We ask the FSMB to persuade the South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners (SDBMOE) to reconsider their validation of Brady Folkens’ autopsy diagnosis in order that his Death Certificate reflects a medically-‐valid cause of death. Thank you for helping this family!
