The UK Government has recently notified seconded British teachers in European Schools that they will be redundant in the event of a no-deal Brexit effective as of 29 March. This means they will not be able to complete the school year.

We demand that the Commission ensure that the teachers' contracts are honoured and that the children's education is not jeopardised. The British teachers started the academic year in good faith on the understanding that their contracts were secure.

It now appears that this is not the case and that they must live with the stress and anguish of watching the political situation play out in the UK Parliament.

Meanwhile, the parents are extremely concerned that their children's education will suffer given the prospect of emergency replacement teachers being taken on without equivalent qualifications and experience and without appropriate background checks to safeguard the children at this point in the school year.

We exhort President Juncker, Commissioner Oettinger and European Chief Negotiator Barnier urgently to find a solution for the children's continuing education and welfare and resolves the teachers' plight. The European Commission has drafted many contingency plans for a no-deal Brexit: what are the contingency plans for the pupils of the European Schools and the seconded British staff?
