Students, Staff, Faculty, Administrators, Alumni and Parents of the McGill Community,
We are calling for the resignation of Heather Munroe-Blum as principal of McGill University.
Ms. Munroe-Blum has antagonized McGill's community, refusing to address problems at all levels of university life, ultimately inviting the use of force against those who disagree with a poorly-communicated and otherwise condemnable agenda.
Ms. Munroe-Blum has proven an incompetent leader as funds dwindle, services diminish, and student experience worsens. In times of crisis and everyday life alike, Ms. Munroe-Blum is absent from the discussion, preferring to unilaterally undermine community members' efforts at dialogue through force and intimidation. The prolonged absence of leadership and direction has created rifts within the McGill community and put students and staff at risk.
The McGill community deserves a different kind of leadership, one that embraces democracy. We are a community composed of passionate, capable students, staff, and professors who respect the pursuit of sometimes conflicting interests. We see that one group's grief increases another's, until the community ceases to function. Ms. Munroe-Blum has acted divisively, turning us against one another in hopes of deflecting blame from the administration. By listening to others' voices, we all stand to gain. A school should be an environment that fosters meaningful dialogue, compromise, and empathy. McGill should inspire us to engage with current economic and political instability in a positive manner. But the precedent set by the administration has only encouraged consent to authoritarianism and negligence of diversity. Community members who see their betterment in their own hands have been tokenized or ignored, despite the responsibility we owe to critically engage in the administration of our education.
We want to be proud of our school. We no longer believe in the current principal's capacity to deliver the promise of a worthy education. A leader is responsible for balancing the interests to which each group is entitled, and the principal has utterly failed to do so. The use of force to avoid a necessary discussion shows that administrators have effectively relinquished their place in the community. We see an opening for change that will only begin when this principal steps down to clear the way for a frank discussion about the challenges we must overcome together. The administration cannot forget that we must all be part of the solution. This is our action: We demand that Ms. Munroe-Blum immediately resign from her position as principal of McGill University.
