Due to the necessary restrictions created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the graduate student body, undergraduate honors studio students and faculty who occupy the studio spaces at the San Francisco Art Institute Fort Mason building have been denied physical studio time. Additionally, we have been further barred from accessing studio resources, the physical spaces in which we are able to work, finished works and works in-progress. This current situation results in an inability to document our work which limits artists from creating further applications for applying to other graduate programs, exhibitions, residencies, and career opportunities. Additionally, this obstructs artists from potentially selling work— therefore creating further financial strain and detriment to our careers.

We advocate for those who possess studio space at Fort Mason who are facing the consequences of lost studio space and time. We demand that the administration work with us to create a solution for compensation of the tangible and intangible resources lost by these artists. We demand the board and administration uphold the institute’s integrity towards its graduate body.

We demand that the institution create a plan of compensation for that which students have lost. We demand that when the shelter-in-place has been lifted, and it is deemed safe by the proper authorities, that one of these options of compensation is given.

1. With shelter in place beginning March 16th extending until May 3rd, we have effectively lost 7 weeks of studio time that we have paid for. We demand that this physical studio time be compensated under terms agreed upon with this committee once shelter in place has been lifted.

2. Our tuition is partially allocated to ensure our possession of individual studios for the duration of the school year. We demand that we receive prorated refunds for the portion of our tuition allocated to funding our individual studio spaces.

We recognize that the shelter in place order is not the fault of SFAI, however, we demand the administration create a plan of compensation to honor our guaranteed studio space and time and the further detriment this causes to our careers.

We understand that SFAI has been attempting to lease the space at Fort Mason to generate more funding for the school since last year. Our concern is with the contradictory terms of the statement about this lease. We demand transparency and honesty regarding this matter.

We demand compensation for the students and artists of the San Francisco Art Institute.
