Why this petition matters

LGBTQ+ youth community has been on a constant rise and faces different barriers simultaneously. The LGBTQ+ population experiences significant barriers to accessing healthcare services, such as discrimination, stigma, health insurance inequality, and healthcare denials due to a person's sexual orientation and gender identity. The United States has around 4.1% of the total population comprised of adult gay, transgender, lesbian, bisexual, queer, and questioning, with 1.7 million high school youths.

  • Due to a growing body of research revealing major health care inequalities suffered by the LGBTQ+ community, LGBTQ+ health is becoming a national priority. Discrimination, ignorance, and fear are just a few of the obstacles LGBTQ+ persons experience in health care. Access to competent regular care and screening is hampered by a lack of educated care, sensitive language, research, and statistics. “The more informed social service and health professionals are, the more comfortable LGBTQ+ clients will be within a setting that can be alienating.
  • Even if they aren't aware of it, healthcare providers carry their own biases about sexual orientation and gender to work. While providing treatment to this group, it's crucial to understand what biases we all have. These required training for healthcare workers will not only improve their cultural competency but will also serve as a key component of learning for students in the healthcare sector and an important opportunity for healthcare workers to continue their professional development in order to provide truly inclusive and equally accessible health services to all.

We are advocating to Healthcare Professionals be required to receive a certain amount of training during their educational practice or after providing care for LGBTQ+ clients. We are advocating the required training for healthcare workers to improve their cultural competencies and develop a diverse lens regarding the health needs of LGBT+ people and address health inequalities in healthcare settings.
