The recent pandemic has shown that populations with the lowest Vitamin D levels are more likely to contract infections. Vitamin D is responsible for helping build immunity , losing weight, and for preventing lots of other diseases. The elderly , steroid medication and people living in areas of less sunshine are more prone to Vitamin D deficiency but generally the UK population as a whole is deficient. Even where people are supplementing with Vitamin D and are exposed to sunlight they may not be absorbing it because they may be deficient in other nutrients that stop it being absorbed.
Each health authority has differing levels of what they class as a deficient. This needs to be addressed and research carried out to introduce a level agreed as a national protocol.
At present the NHS do not offer free screenings for deficiency. If a vitamin D deficiency is identified then the individual is told to buy supplements to treat it but generally there is no follow up to identify if the problem has resolved. Advice around how to help absorb Vitamin D levels is left to individuals which produces inequality of access to disease prevention due to lack of resources, understanding, motivation etc etc. This needs to be addressed by the health service to make sure the public know the importance of Vitamin D and have access to information resources, screening and treatment free of charge on the NHS. This would save the NHS a lot of money as prevention is better than cure!
