TL;DR: This petition is to show insurance companies that there is a demand for coverage of the financial burden of sexual assault.

There is a lack of awareness around the aftermath of sexual assault. Most people are aware that after someone is assaulted, they incur emotional, physical, and psychological damage. However, the financial cost of sexual assault is exorbitant, and goes without being discussed.

Each reported rape costs victims on average $151,423. This includes, but is not limited to taking time off work, counseling services, legal fees, shelter, and medical care (The Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Rape as an Economic Crime, 2015). More often than not, rape victims are forced to pay for their rape kits, which cost on average $1500. Rape victims also need highly specialized health care, which requires costly and specific training, and hospitals often only staff these members in their ER's (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2016). This forces victims to not only have to pay for their rape kits, but also the additional fees accrued by going into the emergency room.

I spent hours of lengthy phone calls with 40 different health insurance companies, and not a single one covered any aftermath of sexual assault. Because, I was told "rape is not an accident".

To put it in simple terms, I can choose to drive my car into a tree, and my car insurance will still cove the damages. But if I walk outside and am sexually assaulted, then my medical insurance considers that negligence.

This petition is to show insurance companies that there is a demand for coverage of the financial burden of sexual assault.

Insurance companies care about one thing: money. Many of the insurance companies that I contacted had never had a single phone call about this issue, so when I suggested penning a new insurance policy covering sexual assault, I was turned down because the demand is not high enough.

Whereas I was told that if the insurance company were to offer it, it would clearly be an easy sell, the companies will not create it, until they feel it is lucrative. Sign this petition to show insurance companies that we mean business. We want to be protected, and to protect others from the financial detriment of sexual assault.
