With the recent outbreak of the novel coronavirus, please join me to request the Canadian government to ban foreign nationals who have set foot in China within the last 14 days, other than Canadian citizens, permanent residents and their immediate family members, from entering Canada.

The novel coronavirus has spread to at least 27 territories outside mainland China and has at least killed 560 people and infected 28,000 people (by Feb. 6, 2020). WHO has declared the illness a world–wide health emergency and increasing confirmed cases have been reported in US and here in Canada, not to mention the suspect cases.

The situation is out of control in Hubei province despite Chinese government spares no effort to curb the virus. Unprecedented measures have been taken in more than 70 countries (by Feb. 6, 2020) including banning foreign nationals who have travelled in China within the last 14 days and closing borders to visitors from mainland China.

It is already well known that containing the current outbreak will be far more difficult than it was to stem SARS since the new virus has much greater transmissibility than SARS and it can also be transmitted by asymptomatic patients!

It is far from enough to suspend all flights from China and for the sake of Canada’s safety, we strongly urge the Canadian government to take tougher measures to eliminate a major potential source of the virus right away. Please do learn from the SARS tragedy 17 years ago.
