Hug Detroit Day Detroit started this petition to Hug Detroit and

HUG Detroit started in August of 2013.  It is the birth, (brain) child, of Sky Covington. She shares her desire and passion to take one day out of the year to HUG Detroit and it's people ... to acknowledge the great accomplishments of this great city and the people in it.To give thanks to those who stayed here through the storm and those who came to help us rise above and excel as we create a New Detroit and new ways of being and doing things together.

We envision that HUG Detroit will spread city, and possibly state, wide. Our hope is that block clubs will hold a Hug Detroit day for the residents in their neighborhood. People will take the opportunity to get out and meet their neighbors and express love for the city and, more importantly, for the citizens that live in and or support Detroit.

“Heal the people … you heal the city”

With all the crime, negative publicity, high unemployment rates and housing foreclosures, the citizens of Detroit needs one day dedicated to the power of LOVE, POSSIBILITY, VISION and REVITALIZATION in this magnificent, resourceful, beautiful city. Yes, one full day of celebration the fun for the dynamic people of Detroit while thanking those who either chose to stay here or have moved to Detroit to contribute to the goal of resurrecting this Great City.

This is also an event to honor those, police, firefighters etc... who have lost their lives in the struggle to protect our community. This event showcases "The Best of Detroit” and attempts to change our youth, neighbors, co-workers, public officials and our own opinions of our great city. By coming together we'll continue to have an enormous impact on redefining Detroit’s present, past and future reputation.

There are multiple activities throughout the day...with a wide variety of spiritual, environmentally rich and entertaining performances. We have, from the Metro Detroit area, poets, storytellers, singers, dancers, musicians, speakers, fashion designers, workshops, vendors and arts & crafts for children and adults.

Hug Detroit day is funded by the people, for the people. Local businesses and neighbors have kept our festival afloat for the past five years. Also, businesses surrounding the festivities, have received financial gain from Hugs & Handshakes, and who doesn’t need that?

We humbly ask for your signature, in the hopes that we're granted permission, and approval, to officiate this neighboring event making Hug Detroit Day a city wide celebration. We hope Hug Detroit Day be become an annual reminder of where we come from, and what our city was founded on. The trust, respect and honesty of Hugs & handshakes. Let's get to it!
