Fresh off our victory heading off cuts to LGBTQ support work at the Toronto District School Board (http://chn.ge/MJAK7B), a new concern has arisen although this time at the Halton District School Board (HDSB).

On June 20, the Board of the HDSB will meet to discuss their 2012-2013 budget. While cuts are being proposed to its Equity and Inclusive Education Team, noticeably absent from the budget is funding for the position of GSA Equity Facilitator.

In Halton, the GSA Equity Facilitator is the only position at the Board that specifically focuses on sexual orientation and gender identity. Some of the important work currently being performed by the GSA Equity Facilitator includes:

-Supporting Gay-Straight Alliances within the Board
-Facilitating training for teachers and staff
-Handling incident responses with regards to homophobia, transphobia and gender-policing
-Coordinating the Halton Inside and Out Conference (http://bit.ly/Hd7oAr)

Eliminating such a valuable position will only leave a huge gap in support for LGBTQ youth at the HDSB and with the recent passage of Bill 13, now is not the time to remove the only position that specifically focuses on issues relating to sexual orientation and gender identity.

But, it's not too late.

The budget still hasn't been finalized and we still have a chance to stop this cut before it happens. Sign today and let the HDSB know that you support the work performed by the GSA Equity Facilitator and that now is not the time to eliminate this valuable position! Call on the HDSB to continue funding the GSA Equity Facilitator position and to continue properly supporting LGBTQ youth within their schools!
