Printables Provided For Virtual HCS Students

Virtual families of Horry County School district agreed and understand the necessity of a printer upon choosing virtual for their children; however, the amount of printing expected of families was never mentioned. Only two weeks into virtual and families are already running into the hassle of finding these printables with no help from the district in assisting teachers or families. iPads do not connect to printers, kids are at home alone or at learning centers without the availability to print on the spot, and there is not navigation on the Genius site to easily locate all printables (whether for practice or submission). Families or teachers have in turn taken it upon themselves to make google drives to share across social media and emails with one another to easily access these print outs.

An example of the number of printables for ONE grade and ONE subject varies from 200-800 pages for the year. A local mom contacted fed ex in an attempt to save on paper and printer costs. Despite fed ex offering her a bundle quote, the amount for the year for her one student was a total of $290.04.

Virtual students should be offered the same resources as brick and mortar students. Print outs are essential to practicing many skills including hand writing, letter formation and showing a students work. This is especially important to continue during this virtual learning to break up a child’s amount of time sitting on a device.

HCS should be providing packets, workbooks, or print outs to virtual families that are now committed to at least the first semester of schooling being virtual. Virtual students have chosen virtual for various reasons including health conditions and family scheduling not being able to accommodate a weekly changing schedule that was chosen for the district. These families should be given more options than having to decide between the added costs of printing the number of papers being requested along OR their child not being able to get the practice along with failing modules due to not submitting printables.
