Why this petition matters

Started by "Save Our Hill"

The physical heritage of Alabama A&M University, founded in 1875 by ex-slave, Dr. William Hooper Councill, is in jeopardy. Currently, there are six buildings on a list for demolition within the next few months.  As such, TIME IS OF ESSENCE!

The campus is listed in the National Register of Historic Places due to its significance in Architecture, Community Planning and Development,  Education, and Ethnic Heritage. Historic buildings on the campus illustrate this history, and their demolition would greatly impact the integrity of its listing in the National Register.

Alabama A&M University is the only university in the city of Huntsville, Alabama, with a National Historic District. Members of the Council of the Alabama Historic Commission from throughout the state of Alabama, voted unanimously to encourage the preservation and maintenance of the campus’ nationally recognized historic district.

In the words of Lee Anne Wofford, Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer of Alabama,  “Demolition is a final solution and once the buildings are gone, their presence and historic significance will be lost forever.”
