Hazardous Bussing to Oak Hollow

To the Draper City Council, Canyons School District, Canyons School Board and Oak Hollow Elementary:

Bussing to Oak Hollow Elementary should be provided for children living between Magic Wand Street and Vestry, north of Rambling Road and just below the South Mountain Golf Course. The crosswalk at Rambling Road and Vestry in Draper is a hazardous safety risk to our children and is the only route to our designated school, Oak Hollow Elementary. Children must cross this risky intersection, and then subsequently cross eight more streets in order to walk, bike or scoot to Oak Hollow Elementary. Everyday, a bus transporting children to Oak Hollow passes our neighborhood. It seems with just a small tweak, that bus could also stop to protect our children from crossing Rambling at Vestry. Our neighborhood is a mere one tenth of a mile shy of the required distance to receive bussing.

Rambling Road is a long, winding thoroughfare with a blind, downhill turn just yards from the crosswalk at Vestry. This intersection only has stop signs on Vestry, encouraging cars to maintain high speeds on Rambling Road in both directions.

Rambling Road and Vestry is a haphazard intersection, and is frequently the site of car accidents, sometimes involving bikers. Pedestrians of all ages are put at risk when crossing this perilous area any time of day.  Crossing guards do not provide adequate safety here due to the blind downhill turn on Rambling. Some families are able to carpool in order to safely transit their children to Oak Hollow. Other families, especially those with two working parents, are left to have their children cross Rambling Road at Vestry during morning rush hour and then again during peak afternoon traffic. Many of these children can testify of the dangers and close calls they have encountered.

It is the duty of leaders and parents to protect our children and support a safe commute to school. Bussing the elementary children in this area to Oak Hollow is an appropriate and necessary safety measure. We hope the members of this community will be this supported before a tragedy occurs.
