Unban "Dear Martin" from Tuscola HS
Tuscola High School has banned the novel "Dear Martin" (Published in 2017 and written by Nic Stone) from our education, pulling it from a 10th grade English class caused by only one parent complaint. As a student at Tuscola High School, I firmly believe we should be reading this book and it should be part of our education. It would give us something more recent that we can feel more familiar with as well as having us confront and learn about issues and injustice that still occur today, instead of only "To kill a Mockingbird". a book that took place and was published, decades ago.
"Dear Martin" is a book that tackles the subjects of racism, racial profiling, police brutality and micro aggressions. The story follows a boy named Justyce who deals with all of the subjects above, then having to reconcile with the fact that he is a good kid, and suddenly being put in handcuffs.
This book can be important to our learning curriculum, it brings awareness to the matters and places you in the shoes of someone who is having to deal with racism and police brutality, and could help students think critically. We are High School students, we can handle books with foul language in them and topics like this and we should have to read more books like this. It is a topic that should never be glossed over or sugar coated. Many others including me, know that Tuscola truly needs this book.
