Julia Ralston started this petition to Hays CISD Board of Directors

In middle school I wasn't allowed to wear shorts. In high school I can't show my shoulders, bra straps, or middrift. My first dress code was in 6th grade, I was wearing athletic shorts. I didn't understand why they were "inappropriate" for school because they weren't "inappropriate" anywhere else. But Chapa Middle School insisted that my 12 year old legs were far too distracting. It was never specified who they were distracting. Fast forward to high school, a place where you're supposed to learn who you are. Aside from being screamed at like animals by adults who demand respect and not being able to simply stand in the cafeteria, Lehman High School's dress code is one of the most ridiculous standards I've ever confronted. I've been slut shamed and publicly humiliated by adults who are supposedly more mature than I. While girls at this school must cover up in order to gain the slightest amount of respect, boys can change shirts in the middle of class, be shirtless during pep rallys, and show their stomaches with no problem. The dress code at Chapa, Lehman, and Hays is blatantly targeted towards young girls and sexualizes them to the point where it seems normal. This must stop. This contributes to rape culture, where police question why the victim was wearing revealing clothing and lacy underwear. Where the argument "she was asking for it" begins. Where boys are taught to see girls not as humans, but as sexual objects. You can help change this. Protect the girls
