This Friday (May 17) Hawkesbury Community Outreach Services, ACON and Hawkesbury City Council are screening the 2018 film directed by Joel Edgerton, Boy Erased.

The film is classified MA15+ and includes multiple profanities, illicit drug use, sexual themes, physical assault, violent rape and a character committing suicide. Its formal classification notes "A scene of strong sexual violence".

The organisers hope that this movie will promote tolerance of LGBT members of the Hawkesbury community.

Irrespective of the virtue in this goal, the movie itself is thoroughly inappropriate for public screening. Showing such politically charged films in public is completely unprecedented. It's showing in a public space is offensive to many members of the community, potentially triggering for victims of sexual violence, unhelpful for at-risk adolescents and emotionally disturbing - and therefore completely irresponsible.

We call on Hawkesbury City Council to refrain from screening the film in the Public Square of Richmond Oval. If it is to be shown, it should be shown in a closed venue where the MA15+ classification can be enforced and unwitting members of the public will not be exposed to it.
