Isabel van der Wal started this petition to Hawkes Bay Regional Council and

Plastic pollution is a huge issue in New-Zealand. The average new-Zealander consumes approximately 31kg of plastic each year, but only recycles 5.58kgs. As a country we send over 252,000 tonnes of plastic waste to the landfill each year. In Hawkes Bay we have extremely limited plastic recycling facilities. We can only recycle number 1 and 2 plastics. We think that this is a huge problem, because we feel like we should be able to recycle more plastic.

Currently over 60% of the population have access to soft plastic recycling facilities. Unfortunately the Hawkes Bay region does not have access to a soft plastic recycling facility. In other parts of the North-Island where they do have soft plastic recycling, there are bins at convenient locations such as countdown or the warehouse. From here the soft plastic is turned into affordable, durable fence posts for farmers. We believe that we should have access to soft plastic recycling bins because we throw away so much plastic each year, and that there is a better place where they could end up. So we are asking you to sign this petition to support us in bringing soft plastic recycling bins and recycling facilities to Hawkes Bay. This would a very valuable asset to our community. This would a great learning opportunity for everyone ranging from kids to adults and would allow everyone to consider their soft plastic use.
