Alaska Aerospace Corporations has proposed building a facility in Hawaii to send up to 24 commercial rocket launches each year into space nearer to the equator than their remote Kodiak, AK, location. The proposed Hawaii location near Hilo is inappropriate as the area is the largely a rural residential district known as Puna. People live in the immediate vicinity to the planned launch site of these massive rockets that burn large quantities of dangerous fuels. A recent news report indicates, “The spaceport would use both liquid and solid fuel rockets, which could be up to 60 feet long.” The corporation wants to build on land owned by W.H. Shipman at 13-acre site near Haena beach, southeast of Hilo, according to AP reports. This proposal is shockingly inappropriate to this lush and environmentally unique area and will have dramatic negative impacts on surrounding communities and residents from noise, pollution and public safety hazards. It also poses a major negative impact on property values and quality of life in an area already recently also impacted by destructive volcanic activity. Other international locations under consideration by this Alaska-based company are clearly more appropriate — Hawaii’s Big Island is not the right place for a rocket launch facility of this scale.
