Hawaii GMO labeling petition
•The Monsanto Corporation has purchased thousands of acres in Hawaii in order to grow genetically modified (GM) crops. (Big Island Weekly)
•These GM crops lead to lower food output at a greater cost to farmers, the environment, and your health. This lower output has the potential to double food prices. (The Future of Food and Farming, Official Govt. Report U.K.)
•The genetic mutations of GM crops spread to other farms through a process called “cross contamination” via wind and bees and contaminate local crops. Over 50% of local papaya has been unintentionally contaminated by genetic modification. (hawaiiseed.org)
• When local farms are contaminated by the GM crops, Monsanto sues local farmers for patent infringement, drives the farmers into bankruptcy, and buys the land. They now own 85% of all corn and soy crops in the world. Monsanto has forbidden many farmers in other states from saving their own seeds. (Food Inc.)
•Monsanto causes high rates of pollution through a commonly used pesticide called “Roundup,” which contaminates air, and ground water, as it does not biodegrade. (Australian Journal of Agricultural Research)
•The pesticides and fertilizers that Monsanto uses are linked to causing Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, imbalanced hormones in children, DNA damage, low testosterone, endocrine disruption, liver cancer, meningitis, infertility, skin cancer, and kidney damage. (J. Soc. Biol. , Chem. ResToxicol., Toxicological Sciences, Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety)
•Monsanto has an unfortunate reputation with pesticides, as it was one of 3 primary developers of Agent Orange in Vietnam.(BBC)
•Monsanto has had documented incidents of trespass into private Hawaii farmland, in which the corporation used aerial crop dusters to contaminate farmers’ soil, which courts have ruled an unlawful trespass to land. (Hon. Weekly)
•Monsanto owns the “terminator gene” patent, a genetic sequence inserted into seeds, which renders the seeds and crops they produce sterile. No one denies that this could spread to other crops. (Time Magazine)
•Hawaii residents deserve the right to make informed choices about what they eat!
