Dear Mayor Kenoi, You may believe that burning our island's solid waste is the only affordable way to be rid of it. That assumption is an error. Even the most superficial investigation will tell you that many communities have found the recycling is a better and more permanent and much safer resolution to the problem of overflowing landfills. This problem is not new and the solution is not new or untested either. Take a look at Seattle and most of Denmark. In particular, look at Vejle in Jutland. They have been recycling for many decades with success. Even Petaluma in California has solved this problem actually make money doing it.
The one biggest part of solid waste by percentage is usually green waste. It is very possible to turn that green waste into a saleable product. The electronic waste should be recycled for the rare earths within it.
The big appliances can be dismantled and any refrigerants that harm the atmosphere can be safely removed. The rest of the appliance can then be crushed and made into new products. Plastics can be separated by home owners and put in special containers so that they can be recycled into new products like deck boards and raw materials for clothing.
Please, Mayor, this waste is not really waste at all. It is, indeed, nearly free raw materials that can and should be used for making new products. The toxic chemicals and materials that are in the waste stream can and should be separated and also be reused.
There is virtually nothing that has no use after the first use.
Burning our solid waste is truly a waste that is worse than foolish. It is dangerous to our people and to our aina.
There are many better ways that work and cost less. All those studies you and others have spent money to have made are biased and in themselves cost far too much and take money from setting up the infrastructure needed to begin doing the right and sensible thing....
RECYCLE, REUSE, RE PURPOSE.
Thank you for your time.
Do the right thing.
Aloha,
Tom Beach

As a taxpayer and resident of Hawaii County, this project does not make economic/financial sense and I oppose it!

We should be promoting waste reduction and recycling, not building something that requires more and more garbage to sustain itself. This is a BAD idea in so many ways!

Our air quality is already compromised with the vog. I also do not like the idea of having to produce material if we fall short of our quota . There must be a better way !
