Allow Darrel Galera to Apply for Hawaii DOE Superintendent

This petition had 241 supporters

Darrel Galera is a highly qualified candidate for the next Superintendent of the Hawaii State Department of Education and should be allowed to apply without the fear of bias from our current Governor.  He is a retired teacher and public school principal.  He led the formation of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Plan for Hawaii, where he traveled extensively all over our state listen to concerns of all public school stakeholders: parents, teachers, administrators, community members, business owners, and students.  He withdrew his application due to "complaints that he had an unfair advantage as a former Board of Education member and friend of Gov. David Ige." (See article from the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.)  The timing of his application may not have been ideal, but he is an ideal candidate and should be allowed to apply for the position.  Even without his recent appointment to the Board of Education, Mr. Galera is highly qualified for this position and has only the best of intentions for how to improve our public schools.  He is not a career politician; he is an educator.  He knows how schools work in Hawaii but also is determined to make them better.  He will be a compassionate leader who will do what is best for our students.  Regardless of his relationship with the governor, let us look objectively at his resume and skill set in comparison to the other candidates.  He is more than qualified and should be allowed to apply.
