The world produces more than 14 million US tons of polystyrene, a versatile hard plastic that, when air is added, is more commonly known as styrofoam.  Not only does styrofoam take 500 years to decompose, but you are not able to recycle styrofoam due to the fact that there are no facilities that recycle styrofoam.  At what point will we commit to stop polluting our planet?

Not only is making styrofoam hazardous, but consuming products from it is just as dangerous.  When people eat or drink a hot substance from a styrofoam container, the styrofoam container’s toxins (benzene and styrene) seep into your food or drink.  Benzene and styrene are suspected carcinogens and neurotoxins that are dangerous to humans.  Styrofoam contamination isn’t only present when it is heated, but also in the food we eat.  Because most styrofoam ends up in the ocean either from gutters and storm drains marine species, such as fish, end up eating it.  In a Californian study, at least 162 marine species including most seabirds were reported to have eaten plastics and other marine litter.

Here in Hawaii, Bill 40 (banning styrofoam and single-use plastics) is already in the works.  I support Bill 40.  But I also believe that change has to happen on the ground, in our backyard.  If Hawaii continues to support restaurants that use styrofoam across our state.

You might not think that our tiny school can have much of an impact on our environment.  But consider this:  According to the City and County of Honolulu's 2006 Waste Characterization Study, it is estimated that Hawaii generates an average of 44,500-65,965 pounds of polystyrene waste per day. This is the damage to our environment that we are responsible for responsible for, if we don't change our practice.

By signing this petition, you are urging all restaurants in Hawaii to end their use of styrofoam and switch to a greener alternative.  I am challenging each and everyone of you to challenge a styrofoam-using restaurant in each of your communities to end their use of styrofoam by December 31.  Use this petition and all the signatures collected here as your tool to be as convincing as possible.  If, on December 31 they are still using styrofoam, then we will boycott their restaurant. Contact me at adelary3024@myhta.org if you need help with challenging your restaurant into using more eco-friendly packaging.

By signing this petition, you're also making a personal commitment to reducing your overall usage of styrofoam in your daily lives.
