We need your letters!

Portland Police Association

Oct 27, 2015 — It's time to kick this grassroots effort up a notch! We need your help explaining to our city why it's vital to raise staffing levels for Portland Police.

Send a Letter to the Editor to the Oregonian or the Portland Tribune (see links at the bottom). Here's some information for your letter you might find helpful:

*Having an adequately staffed police force helps ensure an appropriate response to mental health calls, allows us to conduct proper community policing, and to respond the upswing in gang violence.

*With an understaffed police force it’s harder to respond to calls with the time and attention they deserve. This means all the difference if you are a resident in need of assistance. When you call the police you want to know that they will be there, and fast.

*Portland’s population has grown by 10% since 2001 while staffing and proactive policing are down by 10%. In other words, while the city is growing, the police bureau is getting smaller.

*Mayor Hales recently proposed adding 17 new positions to the PPB. But only 5 will be sworn officers. Just 6 officers were permanently moved to the Gang Enforcement Team.

*In the month of May alone there were 21 retirements, 17 of which were rank and file PPA members. Only 7 new recruits were hired, leaving us far short of keeping up with retirements, let alone grow to adequate levels.

*Portland is one of the nation’s fastest growing cities. In similarly sized cities the average staffing level is 1600 officers. Portland currently has 900 officers. We would need to add 700 officers just to meet the that average.

Send your letter to the Portland Tribune! Information on how to submit your letter is here: http://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/P6F64czlK9qVsdN0r2

Thanks for helping spread the word about the need for higher police staffing in Portland!
