Dr. Ahmadreza Djalali, who is 45 years old, was a researcher at CRIMEDIM, Novara, Italy. He has his doctorate of Medicine from Tabriz University, Iran. He has a PhD in medical science (disaster medicine) from Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden and a European Master in Disaster Medicine (EMDM) degree from Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale, Italy & Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium. He has 46 published scientific articles in important Journals around the world.

He has had collaboration with Tehran and Shiraz universities in Iran, and Natural Disaster Medicine Institute in Iran. He was very successful as a researcher in CRIMEDIM in Piemonte University, and in European Society for Emergency Medicine.

Ahmadreza had previously travelled to Iran without any problems at all.

Dr. Ahmadreza Djalali was on his way from Tehran to Karaj on April 25th, 2016, when he was detained by the security forces of the Ministry of Information and taken to Evin prison. He was initially in section 209, where he was held in solitary confinement for 7 months after his arrest. He was denied access to a lawyer for 7 months.

During those months, he could only call his family for 2 minutes every 2 weeks. When he was in section 209, he started a hunger strike 3 times, and each lasted for a week. He started another hunger strike again from 26th of December, 2016 which he is currently continuing. The hunger strike is becoming a big health issue for him, he has pain in his kidneys and has very low blood pressure.

His life has been threatened before his case has been to fair court trial. After 9 months of prison, Ahmad´s court trial has still not been held. He has lost 18 kg since he has been taken to Evin Prison. He initially weighed 82 kg, and now he weighs 64 kg.

Ahmadreza has informed his family in Iran that he was forced to sign a confession, but the content is unknown. His family has been informed that the investigation relates to an issue of ‘national security’. They have no evidence against him, but they are continuing to keep him.

It is hard to understand how it could be possible for a brilliant researcher like Ahmadreza to be a problem for the national security of Iran.

He has nothing in his mind other than science, helping others and his friends and family.

Ahmadreza has a loving wife and two children, who are of the ages 5 and 14. His 5 year old child asks the mother daily where his father is, and why he isn´t coming home. It is very hard to explain the kid why he hasn´t seen his dad in the past 9 months.

We want Ahmadreza to come back to the scientific community, and to his family and friends. He is a loving father, and his children miss him everyday and want him to come back home.

We respectfully ask the Iranian Authorities, to let Ahmadreza come back home to his children, and to his family.

Ahmadreza has always been proud to be Iranian and would never do anything against his country and the people of Iran.
