Help us petition against the recent Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast’s decision to discontinue the Magic the Gathering tabletop in Korean language.

On July 18, 2022, Wizards of the Coast announced that starting with Dominaria United, Magic will discontinue its offering in Russian, Korean, and Chinese (Traditional). Although relatively small compared to Japan, its neighboring country, Korea has been one of the earliest adapters of Magic. Starting with the 4th Edition, thousands of Koreans have been captivated by the allure of Magic and have sprung communities around the cities where the devotees share their passion for Magic on a weekly basis. With the advent of the Arena (which have sparked interest in actual tabletop) and the recent ease with COVID restrictions, the local gaming stores were only beginning to greet hundreds of new entrants into tabletop Magic.

As Hasbro never provides explanation for its decision, we are left to resort to speculation. It could be assumed that Korean language was discontinued because of its lackluster sales and seemingly smaller player base relative to the neighboring countries, including Japan and China. However, the potential for Magic in Korea is limitless;

  1. Stellar economy and large purchasing power: Korea is currently ranked 10th in nominal GDP and with the GDP per capita of ~USD $35k, there will always be a sizable market for Magic, as long as Hasbro Korea does a good job with marketing
  2. Close economical and historical tie with America: South Korea has always been a sturdy ally to the US and have favorable stance toward US products. That should translate to more prospective entrants to Magic, as long as Hasbro Korea does a good job with marketing
  3. Increase in Korea’s cultural influence: With the advent of K-Pop and films, Korea’s stature as exporter of culture outstrips that of nearby neighboring countries, including Japan and China. The success of Magic in Korea will translate to success of Magic in other parts of the regions, once again, as long as Hasbro Korea does a good job with marketing
  4. Korea has a sizable Pokemon players and collectors: Many purports that as Pokemon players mature, they will move into Magic. Pokemon has been widely popular in Korea, especially for Pre-K and Elementary students. With the early exposure to Pokemon TCG since their youth, they will be more receptive to Magic as they grow older

The potential for Magic is limitless in Korea. Please help us keep Korean edition of Magic the Gathering!
