Why this petition matters

Started by John Chaneski

Every so often a single word can make a huge difference.

Since 1949, the board game Cluedo (or Clue, in North America) has delighted children and adults as a challenging diversion, but one thing has always remained slightly off the mark: only male characters have professional titles. Colonel Mustard and Professor Plum sport the forms of address for the military and academia, partly to set them apart from Mr. Green, but also to convey a sense of story. They are the kind of romantic characters you might encounter in a mystery novel or film.

On the women's side, however, the titles are simply: Miss, Mrs... and Mrs. And while Miss Scarlet is often portrayed as a femme fatale, and Mrs. Peacock as a society matron, only Mrs. White is depicted having a profession and nearly always as a servant: she's a cook, a maid, a housekeeper.

This is where one word could make a difference. Hasbro should change Mrs. White to Dr. White. By portraying her as a white-coated physician, surgeon, or scientist, it would show support for women in general, and give young girls an everyday image of an accomplished professional who just happens to be a woman. It may not seem like much, but it is these kinds of small gestures and images that subtly combine to make up the impression that young people have of other people and themselves.

Please encourage Hasbro to award Mrs. White her doctorate, even if, occasionally, ... she is the one whodunit!
