Hartford Hospital is shutting down the Eating Disorder Program at the Institute of Living in Hartford, Connecticut. The program is no longer being funded for the existing program and for expansion of the program. This program is one of the best in eastern Connecticut and many individuals who suffer with an eating disorder will no longer be able to receive treatment from a eating disorder specific comprehensive program of high quality.
Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any other mental illness and treatment is very limited in the state of Connecticut. The staff within the eating disorder program at Hartford Hospital are trained and extremely knowledgeable in the treatment of eating disorders, which differs from many other mental illnesses. The program not only provides therapeutic groups, but also has a registered dietitian that specializes in the delicate nutritional aspect in the treatment of eating disorders, and a medical doctor on site with training specifically for eating disorders, an important medical component of treatment.
The program is individualized to fit each person's needs and has helped many people find true recovery. Shutting it down will make it extremely hard and potentially impossible for people with eating disorders to receive treatment.
It's a excellent program and shutting its doors is a terrible decision. Fight with me to make a change!
