Make tampons and pads free at Harry Ainlay High School!
It has been over three years since Harry Ainlay High School has stocked menstrual products in the girls' washroom. Long unused, the tampon dispensers in the washrooms are not only an eyesore, but a reminder that the administration can do so much better regarding this issue of health and accessibility.
Up to 25% of North American teenagers have faced period poverty, and 70% of students report feeling period stigma each month. By failing to educate and promote menstrual health and education during adolescence, a crucial time in one's life, Harry Ainlay High School has not utilized its resources and influences, perpetuating the unjust taboo around menstruation.
Now, more than ever, the push to provide menstrual products free of charge is gaining traction, and us students call on the school to follow the example of other Edmonton institutions that have taken action. Nobody chooses to bleed, and even the thought of charging for toilet paper and soap is ludicrous, so why must menstrual products be the exception?
We believe Harry Ainlay High School has adequate resources to combat stigma and promote period education, and the time for change is now.
