Nikki Heiden started this petition to harrison county school district

Dress Code has been an issue in the Harrison County School District for
a while now. It has been affecting students for years, but not in the way
you would think. Everyday students are being sent to ISS for the
smallest things. People are sent for small holes above the knee,
shoulders visible, collar bones exposed, and draw strings present. I,
Nikki Heiden, was in there not long ago for having my skin toned bra
strap visible. This district claims to have education as the top priority
yet is sure does not seem that way. It seems that sending teenage girls
to ISS for the smallest things, such as a bra strap or thigh visible, is more
important. This issue not only takes students away from getting work
done in class, but also is proof of the sexualization of children in
schools.

I have decided that it is time to end this. As a student at West Harrison
High School, both me and Other students are sick and tired of dealing
with it. How is an ear-piercing distracting, how are shoulders
scandalous, how is colored hair unprofessional, how are knees sexual,
and how are we disgraceful for having these things. We are children
being punished for dressing like a normal person, for expressing
ourselves, for being unique.

All I ask, and I am sure I speak for others too, is that you put an end to
this. Let us be ourselves without having to feel like what we are dressed
in is a crime. Allow us to have our own freedom and not have it taken
away with everything we do. Let us be kids and not something to be
looked upon like an object.
