An unsafe condition has been allowed to persist since the development of the Park Place and Park West shopping areas in Cary. The residents of the Silvergrove and surrounding neighborhoods are cut off from safely walking to commerce just blocks away. There is no sidewalk between the Silvergrove feeder street, Fairbanks Rd, and the Park Place shopping center. Because it is so close, and the absent stretch of sidewalk only takes a few minutes to traverse, people take the risk and walk along narrow and uneven shoulder of Chapel Hill Rd. This stretch of road has a very high volume of traffic, and curves at this exact spot where the sidewalk is not connected. As traffic increases and time goes by, a serious accident involving pedestrians and cars is imminent. The Town of Cary's mayor, Harold Weinbrecht, has been contacted about this issue but the sidewalk has been deemed all but impossible as "This area of Chapel Hill Road is complex since it is a state road, is near the Cary Morrisville border, and has no curb and gutter." These are unacceptable excuses for this safety issue. Any driver of this stretch of busy road could be involved in an accident caused by the lack of a sidewalk.
