Robert Leftwich started this petition to Harlingen City Commission

In an effort to assist Edinburg homeowners with financial relief during the coronavirus pandemic, the Edinburg City Council unanimously approved the City of Edinburg COVID-19 Property Tax Relief Exemption for 2020. This measure allows their homeowners who qualify for homestead exemption to save an additional $5,000 on the property value they pay property taxes on.

Working families and small businesses in Harlingen are facing the same real financial hardships during this pandemic as those in Edinburg. The Harlingen City Council should want to do what they can as well to ease the burden on our local homeowners. People in Harlingen have lost their jobs and are struggling to pay for many essential living expenses. Providing some tax relief will help the community as they get back on their feet.

I ask that the Mayor and Commission take action to adopt a 2020 COVID-19 Property Tax Relief Exemption for the citizens of Harlingen as well.

Currently many Harlingen area families and small businesses are still in difficult negotiations with the appraisal district regarding this year’s valuation increases, and aiding the community by adopting tax relief is much needed.

If adopted by our Commission, residents who already have Homestead Exemption status would not need to do anything to receive the savings. If you see ‘HS’ under the exemption category, no further action would be needed. If you don’t have the HS exemption, residents can apply for homestead exemption by downloading forms now at the Cameroncad.org.
