Harford County Public Schools is increasing the pay to play fee to $100, which is now including drama club and participation in school plays and musicals. (Though this fee is not equal to every other sport in HCPS.) Many people participate in the arts and some people participate in both sports and the arts. To some families, this will heavily increase costs, especially if there is more than one high school student in the house. As someone who has participated in my schools theater program I know that schools drama programs pay hundreds and thousands of dollars for rights to shows, along with having proper theater equipment, creating a set, and much more. A schools theater program uses the money they earn too, never asking money from the HCPS and never receiving money from HCPS either, and it is well known that the pay to play money will not even go towards the program they are taking it from. Drama programs have always been a safe space for any student, and for some the only safe space, but not every parent can simply afford this. The arts are already struggling in Harford County Public Schools and by adding this fee, participation levels will be even smaller. We are asking HCPS to be rid of this pay to play fee, or at the very less decrease the fee to make it easier on parents and students. No one should be turned away from the arts because they are unable to pay to play.
