Change the Name and Mascot of Lee-Davis High School
This petition made change with 24,863 supporters!
Lee-Davis High School, home of the Confederates, is in Hanover County, Virginia. This name and mascot glorifies General Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, and the Confederacy as a whole. These people fought for the right to enslave African Americans during the Civil War. This school was established in 1959, during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. It is easy to see that this name was used to combat the Civil Rights Movement and keep African American students out of this school.
There are currently protests across America to fight racial inequality. Because of these protests, our neighbors in Richmond have announced that the Robert E. Lee statue will be taken down. There are 4 other Confederate statues in America that are getting taken down because of this movement. It is time for us to follow suit. No athlete should play for the Confederates. No crowd should cheer for the Confederates. Racism has no place in a high school or in our current society. This change is long overdue.
