Allow Barnstable students the right to choose their graduation cap and gown color

This year, Barnstable High School administration decided to change graduation cap and gown colors from males wearing red and females wearing white to the entire graduating class wearing red, in order to be more gender accommodating. Many members of the graduating class feel as though the right to choose the color gown they wear is a more just and adult decision. The gowns would continue to be both red or white, and students would wear the same color as the gender they most identify with, as in previous years. By forcing everyone to wear red, it is as though women at our high school are being overlooked. This has been a tradition at the school for many many years, and it is not something we would like to discontinue. We believe that giving students the right to make an adult decision promotes decision making skills and freedom of choice. Although a written petition has already been passed around, this online one will hopefully make the process more efficient, and with enough support we will approach Barnstable administration! Thank you!
