In their hunger to claw back potential overpayments Centrelink have been using ATO data matching, never mind the fact that people report fortnightly to Centrelink and the ATO data is simply annual gross income.
If you're a casual worker who received partial support at any time in the past 6 years you might be about to get a kick in the teeth.
If you stuffed up and under-reported at all you will likely get stung, even if your under-reporting wouldn't have otherwise affected your support payments. Under this system they will average out your total income without attempting to match it to fortnightly income. So if that under reported income just occurred in one or two fortnights where your payment was brought down to zero anyway, too bad!
The quality of the data is so poor that people have been issued debts based upon accidental duplications and just plain mistakes. People who travelled overseas are very likely to be issued an incorrect debt as they generally can't report whilst overseas as their income is automatically reported as $0 whilst they are away, even if they are on paid holiday leave which doesn't detract from entitlements but shows as annual ATO income.
Seems kind of wrong that people are assumed guilty and then have to prove themselves innocent. Especially when these are the people least likely to be able to afford solicitors and tax specialists.
Please sign this petition so that we can call for a stop to the automated debt recovery and ATO data matching until it can be proven that the system is clean. The current system is creating stress and worry unnecessarily to already struggling people.
