HANDS OFF OUR BENCH AND OVEN AT DRIVER PLAZA!
On Wed, August 9, Oakland Public Works plans to destroy the cob bench and oven at Driver Plaza built by 100+ community members over the course of one year.
SIGN THIS PETITION to tell the City of Oakland: HANDS OFF OUR BENCH AND OVEN. #Publiclandforpublicgood. #handsoffdriverplaza.
This bench, built by Self-Help Hunger Program and other community members, was created in response to an apparent hate crime by neighbors, who poured cooking and motor oil over the wooden benches that community members sit on at the Plaza. The oven has been used multiple times to make pizza and other hot meals for community members.
Most recently, the City threatened to remove the Community Memorial Fruit Tree Orchard at Driver Plaza, which honors loved ones that have passed away. Last fall, the City removed 20 tree collard plants that Aunti Frances and Self-Help use for cooking a free, nutritious meal every Tuesday at Driver. The City has also twice removed a Port-a-Potty from Driver that enabled houseless community members to use the bathroom in dignity and privacy.

Dear Councilmember Kalb and Mr. Carthan,
My name is __________________ and I live in the ________________neighborhood of Oakland/Berkeley.
I support the bench and oven at Driver Plaza because it helps to increase access to healthy food while building stronger, healthier communities better able to withstand the storm of displacement. While the City of Oakland says it is in favor of resilient communities, by removing the oven and bench at Driver Plaza it is doing the exact opposite. Please instruct the Oakland Public Works Agency to not destroy the bench and oven, which was built by over 100 community members at Driver Plaza.
Because Self-Help hunger Program and Santa Fe CAN are both Adopt-a-Spot stewards of Driver Plaza, Public Works should meet with them before the bench and oven are removed. Public Works should also provide a clear path to permitting the bench and oven in a good-faith effort to work with, not against, the community.
