Boycott Handel’s Ice Cream!
The franchise owner of Huntsville’s Handel’s Ice Cream, Rick Jarrell, is unfit for ownership. For years, employees have cycled through the establishment with similar experiences: poor management, prejudice towards BIPOC, late checks, inadequate cleaning procedures and more.
On his public Facebook page, Rick Jarrell regularly posts racist memes and insensitive material. For instance, a recent picture shows George Floyd’s face superimposed on Derick Chauvin’s, the police officer that murdered him, with the caption “If it were switched around, would there still be riots and looting?”
Many of these employees are high school students and were intimidated to speak up before. There is strength in numbers.
Below is a quote from a former employee:
“I worked at Handel’s my senior year of high school into my first year of college. While we started with a diverse staff, I was the only person of color to get promoted with a pay raise in my time working there. I would often see my white peers get promoted with less experience than other deserving employees. Routinely when we catered events, white employees would be highlighted as the face of our company. When I closed the store at night, Mr. Jarrell would stay to watch. One day I brought this up in conversation with the other mangers, to my surprise, he did not stay to watch them. “
As we continue to fight injustice nationwide, please take this small step in creating change by signing this petition and demanding Rick Jarrell is held accountable for his actions. We would like a formal apology from Handel’s and the removal of the Jarrel family from the franchise.
