STOP Short Breaks cuts for disabled children 2015/16
This petition had 2,372 supporters
Hampshire County Council want to cut the Short Breaks budget from £2.8m to £1m, a 67% cut! This compares to a 12% cut across the council's total budget or a 12% for the highways budget.
Children and young people with disabilities and/or additional needs rely on the Short Breaks Service to join in with safe, fun and exciting acitivities and give parents/carers an opportunity to have a much needed break from caring.
If familes don't have a break they will go into crisis and end up costing the county council a lot more.
Hampshire County Council have spent over £9m on Short Breaks over the past 3 years and built up a very successful service that benefit's 1000's of children; this includes the Community Buddy Scheme, Hampshire's Gateway programme, mainstream acitivites such as Brownies, Cubs, swimming lessons and specialist play schemes offering 1 to 1 support in a safe environment. Why take this all away?
The new Families & Children's Act 2014 sets out many changes including giving our children more choice to meet their outcomes; if they take away Short Breaks there will be a lot less choice. Surely our children deserve to feel 'normal' and do activites that others take for granted; feel more independent and confident; learn life skills and generally have lots of fun.
Please sign our petiton and make Children's Services think what impact they are going to make to our children and families.
The more support the better, we have to stop them.
