Cleaner Greener Gosport & Fareham started this petition to Hampshire County Council and

Hampshire Council are now removing glass recycling bins from their amenity tips. It's time HCC finally caught up and finally collected glass at the kerbside!

Glass cannot decompose so why are more than 28 billion glass bottles and jars ending up in landfills every year?

Glass is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without loss in quality or purity. Recycling a single glass bottle will save enough energy to power a laptop for half an hour.

Glass is easily recycled and this creates a significant environmental benefit. Glass which is placed in a refuse or recycling bin is not recycled, and this is not only worse for the environment but also contributes to the overall costs which the council has to meet from council tax.

One option is to have our bottles and jars collected for recycling once every four weeks. We would be supplied with a box for our empties, which we can use for storage and then put out on collection day. Similar collection schemes work very successfully in many other council areas i.e Winchester, Basingstoke, Aldershot Chandlers Ford & Eastleigh.

Let's not wait any longer; let Hampshire County Council and your local council know that they need to catch up with other cities and towns and start collecting glass at the kerbside.
