HPD Ride Alongs

HPD Ride Alongs
Why this petition matters
As a sworn officer of the Hammond Police Department, I believe it is valuable to allow non-patrol officers the opportunity to do ride alongs with patrol officers. This gives the chance for non-patrol officers such a corrections, dispatch, or other inner-department assignments the opportunity to experience the outside world of law enforcement.
Getting out on the streets can be a great learning experience for those who have intentions on moving to patrol or for those who are undecided. Seeing how fast things can change in one call will determine whether or not this is for you. I’ve spoken to multiple officers of different ranks who have the same view of the ride alongs.
Since we all carry a badge and firearm, I believe we are all capable of going to the front lines and experiencing it for ourselves. This petition is just an outlook on the advantages and opportunities of gaining potential candidates for patrol. If needed, a waiver could be signed and officers can do a ride along if their shift allows them without leaving it short handed or on volunteered personal time.
If you agree, sign this petition and leave a short comment on your outlook if you please. Thank You all for your service.
