We would like to request that barriers filling and blocking the skateboarding pit at Bishops Park be removed and pit be reopened for use immediately.

Blocking off the pit has pushed skateboarding into the main area of the square, which makes it difficult for non-skaters (with small children or dogs) to circulate.  Reopening the skating pit will shift the skaters back to that area of the park, and leave the main square free again for other users.

Claiming the purpose of closing off the pit is for social distancing makes no sense when one sees the climbing structure just feet away literally spilling over with children, not to mention the overall overpopulation in the park.

There is no additional social distancing benefit to having this area closed off.

At a time when the teenage population is ridden with an exponential rise in mental health issues due to confinement (violence, drug/alcohol use, eating disorders, suicide), skateboarding is a physically challenging any mentally stimulating SPORT which  — because of the “cool” and “rebel” image it portrays — is particularly attractive to our teens, as can be seen by the significant increase in skaters at the park.

Skating is a healthy and accessible activity that our teens can partake in during lockdown, keeping them off the streets and physically active.

Please reopen the skating pit at Bishops Park immediately so our kids can use it, and so the main area of the square is returned to non-skating users.
