Hammersmith bridge has been shut for more than a year and now water traffic cannot even pass underneath. Council and government fight over soaring repair costs. Something radical is needed. Surely, despite it’s historical listing, the best and most cost and time effective solution is to remove the old bridge and build a brand new one? Interestingly this is not without precedent as the original Hammersmith bridge, built in the 1820s was demolished to build the current bridge.
