Michelle Gonzales started this petition to Hamilton City Council and

Statues are not history. You cannot change, edit, or rewrite history by taking down a statue.

But in the case of the MacDonald statue in Gore Park in Hamilton Ontario, statues are shrines to men who sought to build empires by destroying the lives of Indigenous people. Along with committing other racist crimes, MacDonald was a major architect of the Indian Residential Schools.

As we weep and gnash our teeth over this national tragedy, a tragedy that continues to ripple down into future generations of Indigenous people, the spirit of white supremacy is still going strong in Canada and we must do whatever we can to make amends.

This is one small thing we can do to show solidarity with our Indigenous neighbours. That we see a new way forward where we celebrate them as a sovereign sister nation.

MACDONALD MUST COME DOWN IN GORE PARK.

We call on Hamilton City Council and Mayor Fred Eisenberg to take decisive and long overdue action to remove the statue of John A. MacDonald in Gore Park in Hamilton Ontario.

Remove this shrine to a man who orchestrated the genocide of Indigenous people in Canada - and leave him in the history books where he belongs.
