Why this petition matters

Lake of the Woods subdivision in Hubley, NS already has a lot of traffic at its entrance.  Located at Silver Birch Drive and St. Margarets Bay Road, about 120 meters from the on ramp for Hwy 103, it is the only access to approximately 250 homes in Lake of the Woods subdivision and in Cambrian Cove subdivision.  The BLT Trail crosses Silver Birch Drive just under 30 meters from the entrance and generates a steady flow of pedestrian, ATV and bicycle traffic.  Trail users park their vehicles along Silver Birch Drive adding to the congestion.  School children from Sheldrake Lake subdivision on the other side of St. Margarets Bay Road have to use this entrance to access the BLT Trail to walk to school.  Mailboxes just inside the entrance necessitate pedestrians and vehicles stopping to pick up mail.

A new application for additional homes with a driveway exiting a few meters from the STOP sign on Silver Birch Drive has been submitted to City Planning at HRM.  The driveway, already approved by NSTIR, is currently under construction. The distance from the stop sign to the new driveway is about 15 meters. And the distance from the BLT trail to the new driveway is about 12 meters. Should the new houses be approved, they will generate considerable additional traffic congestion at the entrance to our subdivision which would be extremely dangerous.

We ask the Honourable Iain Rankin MLA and Councillor Matt Whitman to please prevent any new housing and driveway development at this entrance.
