Please sign this petition to ask to Half the Inheritance Tax Rate to 20%

More and more people are being forced to sell their family home, which may have been in the family for generations because of this unfair tax.  With the Chancellor keeping nil rate band and residence nil rate tax staying the same until at least April 2026 more people are being caught by the 40% tax on inheritance tax.

It is an unfair tax as people pay Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax, VAT etc already, so double taxing on death seems very wrong when so many other countries do not adopt this practice.

With Inflation being currently 7% and house prices continuing to increase in recent years, this seems an unfair and unjust practice. Either the allowance should increase to take into account the current increases in people’s estates or if the rate is to stay the same, lower the rate from 40% to 20% so there is a greater chance grieving families will not have to sell their parents home which their parents would potentially want them to live in.

We are not asking for this tax to be scrapped but a fairer rate to reflect the hard work and contribution people have made to this country should not come in the form of a 40% tax bill.

Even when Benjamin Franklin said “nothing is certain except death and taxes”. When he said this, inheritance was 1% to any child, lineal descendant, parent or lineal ascendant in the UK, on any residual over £20. It was then known as Legacy Duty.
