Cottage owners need access to their cottages
Cottage owners who do not reside in Halidmand are being prevented access to occupy their seasonal residence. Many have necessary maintenance to complete that can take several days at a time and are being told they cannot sleep there while they are completing it. These cottage owners have paid large amounts of property tax and have ongoing fixed expenses such as property insurance, hydro, telephone. Some are retired folks who stay there in summer to relieve health symtoms as their cottages are more accessible then their primary homes being one floor cottages. There are safe ways for them to access their cottages such as bringing supplies and purchasing gasoline from their home city. They can occupy their seasonal residences without putting anyone at risk. The properties are large and they can remain in their cottages and on the property and practice safe social distancing as they do at their primary residence. These cottages are a livelihood for some and some owners have very few summers left in their life where they can enjoy their cottages. The Halidmand Norfolk Health unit should lift this order banning cottage owners from occupying their own cottages. It has been in place since April 23.2020. Many cottage owners need to occupy to clean up their cottages that are faced with flooding, downed trees and usual things they are faced with when opening up in the spring. The chief medical officer of Ontario has consulted with the Public health Measures Table and they concluded section 22 orders are not necessary in this situation and that communication with the public discouraging use is all that is needed. Seasonal cottage owners should have not had such orders places upon as such.
