The Issue

It is said that Shoreditch got its name after Edward IV's mistress Jane Shore was thrown in a ditch after her death. Reeping the benefits and then throwing her away - It seems as though the areas history is repeating itself.

Much of Shoreditch's rejuvenation is due to the large community of creatives who have made Shoreditch their home and have produced some outstanding pieces of work over the years. Now home to some modern day art pioneers, such as Yinka Shonibare, Tracy Emin & Damien Hirst to name a few, Shoreditch owes it's rise in popularity to much of what has been taking place over the past two decades.

Now it's the place to be seen, the place to live, the place work...It's one of the most popular areas of London for pretty much anything and everything you'd want to do - Great bars and even better restaurant, laxed atmospheres and cool people, Shoreditch has most definately arrived with a BANG! Besides the afore mentioned renowned artists, Shoreditch is home to dozens of smaller creative organisations who give Shoreditch its name.

So what's next? You'd assume that the creatives that have made Shoreditch what it is today would be rewarded if not only recognised for their contribution to the area. Especially at a time when we should be most proud to show off our capital. This is is simply not the case - Many of the same artists who have made Shoreditch what it is today are now being branded criminals simply because of the art they choose to produce. Call it Graffiti, Aerosol Art, Street Art, whichever umbrella you want to put it under, it is undoubtedly Shoreditch's signature decor and is now viewed by the local council as vandalism carried out by criminals.

Any wall created has cost that artist a lot in money, time and effort and particularly if it is on a permission site should be respected not painted over just because somebody wants to tick a box and forget how and why Shoreditch got to where it is today.

We are EndoftheLine, a small Shoreditch based creative agency dedicated to producing beautiful pieces of art. Over the past couple of months, in preparation for the Olympics, several of our commissioned, authorised pieces have been buffed over by Hackney Council because they are now construed as vandalism. We are not alone. Several other Shoreditch and Hackney based creatives have suffered the same fate.

We feel a great injustice to not the individuals that have created these pieces of work, but also to the history, culture and heart & soul that Shoreditch has become renowned for.
