Alice Roberts started this petition to Hackney Council

There are major road danger and traffic issues in the Brooke / Evering Roads and Hackney Downs area:

  • There are 8 schools in the area: their students need much safer streets for walking and cycling. These are Benthal, St Scholastica’s, Northwold, Al Falah, Baden Powell and Nightingale primaries, and Mossbourne and Stormont secondaries. Also, many students from other schools, including Clapton Girls and Petchey, walk and cycle through this area on their way to school.
  • There are several road danger hotspots in the area. As well as the Brooke/Evering junction, Crash Map shows hotspots at the junction of Brooke Rd/Upper Clapton Road and the junction of Evering Rd/Upper Clapton Rd, for example.
  • Speeding is a known problem on Evering, Nightingale and Kenninghall Roads and rat-running in many residential streets affects junctions and roads in the area, with drivers avoiding congestion on main roads.

We call on Hackney Council to take urgent action to make our streets safer and healthier. Hackney Council - please act now to create a Hackney Downs 'Low Traffic Neighbourhood' with the interventions proposed in the 'Vision' created by Hackney's pedestrian and cycling advocates and shown in their map including 'school streets' for all our local schools.
