By nature, monkeys are cheeky, yes. Cats are curious, agreed. Foxes? Well, they're sly. I GET IT!

But as a victim of prejudice while in my football playing days, the term "cheeky monkey" is in no way endearing to me. Personally, society has lost the right to use that term endearingly or positively anymore in my presence or in ANY person of colour's presence. And that's the fault of ignorant, bigoted racists not mine. They’ve created an environment where a black child in a hoodie with the slogan “Coolest monkey in the jungle” cannot be deemed innocent or playful. We live in a world where there is a lack of sympathy for the black experience; a massive disconnect between those who can genuinely see what is hurtful and offensive, and those who choose not to. Those responsible for this campaign would never have put an Arab child in a hoodie with the slogan “I’m the bomb” or a Jewish child with a skull cap in a hoodie with the slogan “I’m gassed”. It just wouldn’t happen. In 2018 people at social sporting events still make monkey noises and throw bananas at black players. Are you telling me H&M can’t see that using that child model is inflammatory? They are flagrantly perpetuating this ignorant and hurtful slur.

They should remove the item in question and issue a public apology, and explain how they came to the conclusion that this was a good idea. Additionally, we need to know if the the parents of this child were involved in this decision.
