Wol Atak started this petition to H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit of the Republic of South Sudan

On 2 August 2021, Kuel Aguer was arrested and detained for two weeks in the National Security Service facility after signing a declaration calling for the President to resign. It cited lack of vision and a failure of leadership as reasons for the crises in the country. Kuel was later transferred to Juba Central Prison. He has been in illegal detention for over two months. He has never been brought before a court of law.

Kuel Aguer is a widely respected citizen who has advocated for good governance, justice, freedom, and a corruption-free South Sudan. He is no stranger to political detention having been in prison several times in the past. He has been a consistent voice for the voiceless.

In September, pictures of Kuel in poor health provoked outrage after they circulated on social media, forcing the government to allow him to be admitted to a hospital in Juba where he remains. However, doctors have advised that Kuel's condition is now critical, cannot be treated in South Sudan, and have referred him to a hospital in Khartoum, Sudan as it is not able to provide the care that Kuel urgently needs.

We are therefore calling on the President to release Kuel Aguer immediately so he can go and receive medical care.
